Many of us love this time of year for various reasons, it is football time, fall is upon us, the leaves start changing colors, and Oktoberfest. I present you with 6 facts about Oktoberfest and 5 facts about the stock market in October. Let’s jump right in:
FACT #1
Oktoberfest began in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Sax-Hildurghausen
October if often referred to as “October Effect” due to the extreme volatility in the stock market. In fact, according to Barron’s, October’s volatility is 34% greater than the average of the other 11 months.
FACT #2:
Even though it is called Oktoberfest, it really is Septemberfest. The festival starts in September and runs until the first Sunday of October.
Even though the stock market is most volatile in October, the S&P 500 has a positive average return of 1.4% for the month.
